We are pleased with the rousing reception we've received and we feel honored to offer you such good hotel rates in major cities such as New York, London, Las Vegas and Miami.

I wanted to share with you a secret-we often have better rates in the call center than we do online. How can we do this? We have negotiated special rates that the hotels give us that they don't want to publicize online so we make them available only in the call center! Here's how it works-call 800 468 3578 and ask for special unpublished rates in a selected city. We offer you a list of hotels but don't tell you the price, but advise you they are typically 10-50% off the rate listed online. You select a hotel and present your credit card and we tell you the price! You can change or cancel your reservation for a modest $25 fee. The savings are dramatic. Try us out and test our service.

All our call center agents are knowledgeable, U.S. based agents who are trained to help you. Our hold times are short and we hope you find our service excellent. As a special incentive, we offer a $25 discount for all call center bookings booked between now and December 31. see http://news.getaroom.com/25-off-fall-promotion/

Give us a try and tell me what you think. I welcome your comments and suggestions.

Best Regards,  David Litman

Message from President and CEO, Alon Logo
Greg Yavner

Dear Kate,

As proof of its relative economic strength, Israel became the first country to raise interest rates on the heels of the global downturn. Israel's increasing industry diversification helped GDP avoid a contraction in 2009 (it actually grew 0.5%), as was the case for most other countries. This is a major accomplishment during the worst global recession in decades.  75% of Israeli exports are hi-tech products (many of which are extremely unique asw ell as high value-added) which showed better relative demand in 2009.

Siemens, the industrial giant, acquired Solel Systems in Israel, IBM acquired Guardium, Computer Associates purchased Oblicore (a remote server software company), and GE invested in SolarEdge of Herzliya, demonstrating major corporate powers' appetite for Israeli innovation.  Further, the Bird Foundation  announced numerous collaborative deals between US and Israeli companies (see news below) and Ada E. Yonath of the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel won a Nobel Prize for studies of the structure and function of the ribosome.

Our Chamber has elected a stellar new Executive Committee and as a whole, has an ambitious plan and clear vision to accelerate business development between Texas and Israel.  In this action-packed Newsletter, you will read about numerous business opportunities, unique events, Texas' relative economic strength in the United states and more.  We are pleased that our business inquiries are increasing, and encourage you to contact myself and/or our industry committee chairs to get in on the exploding growth of the Texas-Israel Chamber.

We were pleased to host the leaders of the Rabin Medical Center in Dallas in front of leading health care executives and community leaders this past October.  We also held numerous business development conference calls and committee calls in anticipation of our major cleantech conference February 22 in Austin which will feature a powerful lineup of companies and speakers. We have opportunities available for companies to present at the conference and sponsor, but time is running short and early bird registration ends January 22.

Our Next event is in Houston February 9th at 6:30pm where we will host the new Chairman of Continental Airlines and the President of Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI).  Our Annual North Texas business dinner will be April 15, 2010 in Dallas honoring Ranaan Horowitz, CEO of Elbit Systems of America and featuring Elad Tshuva, Vice Chairman of Delek Group and Sheldon I. Stein, Managing Director & Vice Chairman of investment banking for Bank of America Merrill Lynch. Please feel free to contact me at your convenience to learn more about how you can get involved. Wishing you all a pleasant rest of the winter, Greg

Israel's Medical Device Market

Israel has the largest medical device market in the Middle East region and is set to grow at an attractive rate of 6.1% in the medium term. Much of the market, at over 80%, is supplied by imports, and a significant portion of these in value terms are dominated by "high-end" products falling under the diagnostic imaging apparatus category. In terms of expenditure, Israel spends around 8.0% of total GDP on healthcare and per capita spending rates are considered high by regional and world standards. Much of spending is in the public sector and the government has made allowances in recent years to expand the number of services and treatment offered by public health insurance programs. The country also has a rapidly growing elderly demographic that is contributing to rising healthcare costs. (Source:  Research and Markets)

BrainStorm Stem Cell Therapy Treatment More Effective Than Other Current Potential Treatments

BrainStorm Cell Therapeutics announced that the company's therapeutic approach for treating neurodegenerative diseases was shown to be superior to other current potential stem cell treatments. A scientific paper published in the Israel Medical Association Journal shows the migratory capacity of Neurotrophic Factor Stem Cells (NTF-SC) in animal models of Parkinson's disease and Huntington disease. The study demonstrated that in a rat model for Parkinson's disease, the efficacy of NTF-SC was superior to that of mesenchymal stem cells in terms of behavioral, biochemical and histological indices. Petah Tikva's BrainStorm Cell Therapeutics (http://www.brainstorm-cell.com) is an emerging company developing adult stem cell therapeutic products, derived from autologous (self) bone marrow cells, for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. Israel, US near next-generation Arrow deal -

A senior Israel Aerospace Industries Ltd. (IAI) (TASE: ARSP.B1) source confirmed the report to "Globes", saying that the Arrow 3 is designed to intercept advanced medium-range ballistic missiles. It has more advanced features than its predecessors, including better maneuverability that improves interception ability.

The source added, "IAI has been developing the Arrow 3 since early 2009, after the defense establishment gave it the go-ahead. Work is proceeding rapidly, both in terms of the technology and administration." (Source:  Globes)

Special thanks to Yoram Ettinger, ATID and other colleagues and friends of the TiCoC for the following business news:

1.The Central Bureau of Statistics reported preliminary estimates regarding Israel's economy in 2009. Israel's gross domestic product (GDP) grew 0.5% in 2009, in contrast to an OECD average of negative 3.5%. Early forecasts for 2009 were for GDP to shrink 1.5%. In September, the Bank of Israel raised its forecast to 0% growth. As such, the actual figures beat even the most optimistic forecast. (Globes

2.  Most private company forecasts predict Israel's economy will grow between 2-5% in 2010.  The unemployment rate has been falling since May according to the Central Bureau of Statistics.

3. Deals in Israel - 2H 2009:  SGE invested $12MN in Israel's NetforMx (Globes, Dec. 15). Sequoia and Charles River participated in a $10MN round by Israel's CloudShare (Globes, Dec. 14). Emergence Capital led a $10MN 3rd round by Israel's SupportSpace (Globes, Nov. 27). JK&B Capital and Longworth participated in the $8.6MN 2nd round by Israel's ViewFinity (Globes, Dec. 24). DAG Ventures led am $8MN 3rd round by Israel's Clarizon (Globes, Dec. 15). Bessmer, Vulcan Capital and Ascent Ventures participated in a $6MN round by Israel's Bizo (Globes, Nov. 27). 4. Steinitz Says Israel to Start Cutting Taxes From 2011

Minister of Finance Steinitz told a gathering of the Friends of Tel-Aviv University that Israel is in the process of an economic recovery that accelerated in September, but this is only the beginning, and there are more challenges ahead. As reported by Globes, Steinitz said "there is room for cautious optimism, but it must be emphasized that we are not at the end of the recovery but only at the start. Steinitz promised that, in 2011, when elsewhere in the world taxes start to rise to deal with higher deficits, the opposite will happen in Israel. "Most countries will raise taxes from 2011 and we will lower taxes, including companies' tax, from 2011 to 2016," Steinitz said, explaining that pumping money into the Israeli economy would not have helped it. (Globes 02.11)

5. On 6 November, Fitch Ratings affirmed the State of Israel's Long-term Foreign and Local Currency Issuer Default Ratings (IDR) at 'A' and 'A+' respectively with Stable Outlooks. The Short-term Foreign Currency IDR is affirmed at 'F1' and the Country Ceiling at 'AA-'. Externally, the Government of Israel became a net external creditor for the first time in 2008, although it still falls short of 'A' norms on this measure. Burgeoning international reserves have more than doubled to $60bn since the end of 2007 and have been the key factor behind this status change also facilitated by a strong current account surplus and buoyant net capital inflows. The economy as a whole also passed a new milestone in 2008, registering a surplus of external financial assets over liabilities for the first time. Israel expects its standing on the international stage to be further enhanced by OECD membership in the near future. (Source: Fitch)

6. Chief Scientist Dr. Eli Opper of Israel's Ministry of Industry Trade & Labor has approved NIS 20.5 million in grants for 12 new incubator projects including a combination of drugs to cure open wounds and develop antibodies to prevent and cure infectious diseases at NGT i n Nazareth, a system to deliver medicines under development at Yozmot Granot Initiative Center , a project to develop insulin-producing tissue to treat diabetes and another for monitoring amniotic fluid in pregnant women at Van Leer Ventures Jerusalem Ltd. 7.Israel's graduation to "developed market" status in the Morgan Stanley Capital International Index (MSCI) in May 2010 is a much-anticipated event -- a tribute to the strides Israel has made in opening its economy to market competition and globalization. However, with the country's graduation from MSCI's Emerging Markets Index come major challenges, including the potential decline of US$2.5 billion of foreign equity investment, according to a new report from the Milken Institute. The size of potential inflows that might offset this loss is unclear, given the sector-based investment strategy commonly used by developed-market investors.

Israel and the Global Equity Market urges Israeli-based businesses, government agencies and capital-market regulators to respond quickly. The report outlines specific steps that can be taken to increase liquidity and broaden the base of portfolio investors. "The potential outflows and stock reductions could negatively impact Israeli market liquidity in the short term, increase the cost of capital, and reduce overall portfolio investment," said Glenn Yago, director of Capital Studies and head of the Milken Institute's Israel Center. "Increasing transparency and liquidity can help Israel overcome these new challenges and are required to attract international investors."

AUSTIN - Corporate executives ranked Texas' business climate best in the nation for the fourth consecutive time according to a survey conducted by Development Counsellors International (DCI), an economic development and tourism marketing firm. The survey measures CEO's perception of a state's business climate based on several economic variables.

"Texas is far and away the best place in America to do business," Gov. Perry said. "Business leaders throughout the world recognize the Lone Star State as a place where their business can grow and thrive thanks to our reasonable regulations, low taxes, fair legal environment, educated workforce and an unparalleled quality of life."

DCI surveyed 281 executives in charge of site selection for various sized companies. Texas gained 40.8 percent of the top votes, which named a favorable tax climate, workforce cost and availability, and pro-business climate as the top features influencing positive perception.

Overall, the Texas economy continues to grow at nearly three times the national average. CNBC recently named Texas America's Top State for Business and overall best economy. Texas was also recently recognized by CEO magazine as the Best State to do Business for the third year in a row, and is now home to more fortune 500 companies than any other state in the nation. Last year, more than half of all new jobs created in the United States were created in Texas.

A new Israeli medical innovation enables early detection of cancer.  A statement by the Israeli Ben-Gurion University unveiled a new medical innovation developed in Israel, which enables early detection & examination of cancerous skin tumors before they become visible to the eye. According to Ha'Aretz, the medical device utilizes harmless radiation directed towards the tumor and returned to it, allowing it to analyze the tumor measurement, including contours and spread analysis. Initial testing was carried out at Soroka Medical Center in Be'er Sheva, with participation of 37 patients diagnosed with skin lesions already in line to have them surgically removed, during which approximately 73 types, cancerous lesions among them, were analyzed by the device. During testing, the instrument identified several forms of skin tumors, including melanoma. The findings were presented at a conference of Israeli Union of Plastic Surgery in Tel Aviv. "Better Place will spend $1.1 billion on Israeli electric car project"

Deutsche Bank estimates that the company could achieve a 5% share of Israel's vehicle fleet by 2016, amounting to 110,000 electric vehicles. This 110,000 figure is based on a net annual growth rate of 14,000-30,000 subscribers a year in 2012. DB believes that if this target is reached, and assuming average annual revenue of $4,250 per subscriber, Better Place could see $500 million revenue a year by the end of 2016. DB estimates that the majority of Better Place's investment will be capital investment in buying the batteries and expects the cost of the batteries to gradually drop from $14,000 each today to $9.500 each in 2015. Assuming 110,000 cars by 2016, the investment could reach $1 billion. In addition, Better Place will have to invest $25 million to set up 50 battery replacement centers, and up to $57 million to set up 77,000 recharging points at $750 per point. Israeli scientists have developed a way to create beating heart cells with skin cells reprogrammed to become stem cells, making it possible to one day clinically repair a damaged heart. Published in the latest issue of Circulation, the findings by Professor Lior Gepstein of the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology could make it possible to clinically repair damaged human hearts. Such an application is at least 10 to 20 years away, says Gepstein, but the process can already be utilized for in-depth study of genetic diseases and the development of personalized drugs for irregular heartbeats and other inherited disorders. Chemical engineer at the Technion who was named one of the world's 35 top young scientists after developing a device that can detect cancers by "sniffing out" biomarkers, has now discovered that it can also be used to discover the presence of kidney disease. It will "require a long and tiring path" to reach the target of diagnosis of kidney disease early enough to delay kidney failure and dialysis, says Dr. Hossam Haick, since 2006 a senior lecturer in chemical engineering, whose electronic "nose" can diagnose cancer in just two or three minutes by analyzing a patient's breath.  Haick, 34, received his bachelor's of science from Ben-Gurion University and doctorate from the Technion; he spent two years at the Weizmann Institute of Science and later pursued post-doctoral research at California Institute of Technology (Caltech), where he did much of the work leading to the device. He currently holds the position of senior lecturer in the Technion Faculty of Chemical Engineering and the university's Russell Berrie Nanotechnology Institute. Last year, Haick was chosen for inclusion in a list known as the "TR35" from more than 300 nominees by a panel of expert judges and editorial staff at Technology Review, the magazine of innovation of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Previous TR35 lists have included Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page and Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg. (Source: Jpost)

Two new Israeli methods for the production of electricity put forth: Car-travel on highways, and a micro-turbine home system. A group of investors succeeded in producing electricity from the travel of cars along a highway.

The investors have begun talks to install their technology on various highways throughout Israel. Prof. Chaim Abramovitch, chairman of the new company, told Army Radio that his system could provide the electricity needs for thousands of homes each year.  In addition, scientists from Ariel University in Samaria and a Russian research center in St. Petersburg have developed an environmentally-friendly home system that produces heat and electricity.  The system is based on a ceramic gas micro-turbine. Israel's Chief Scientist has dedicated a half-million dollars towards the project, which will be built and marketed by the CMT start-up company under the auspices of the LN Innovative Technologies Center in Haifa. Metal turbines are limited in the amount of heat and electricity they can produce by the temperatures they can attain. The new turbine, fashioned out of ceramics and with a unique canal structure inside the rotor, can reach higher temperatures than the metal one. The turbine can be attached to a home's existing gas and electric infrastructures, producing a free unit of electricity for every three units of heat. This enables the homeowner to receive both electricity and heat for the price of just the heat. (Source:  Israel National News)

Consortium Energy Texas, LLC, a member of the TiCoC, works with large scale and portfolio building owners to build a single, integrated, platform over which multiple buildings can be operated simultaneously. One of the key benefits from our approach is that we enable the Demand Side (less consumption) and the Supply Side (lower cost electrons) of the energy equation to work together cohesively.  We utilize a sophisticated software program (currently in use at Princeton Univ., MIT and Johns Hopkins Univ.) that predicts heat load in buildings and then creates a dispatch plan of how to manage equipment in the most cost-effective manner. Savings of between 15% - 35% have achieved from our remote monitoring center, where best-in-class building engineers manage energy intensity and consumption by interpreting real-time data and adjusting settings for optimal energy efficiency. Our real-time data is used by commodity brokers who help procure gas and electricity at the lowest possible rate.  That's because the client's facility can now modulate energy use in relationship to the real-time cost to buy it, thereby paying less for the commodity. Jonathon Spitz, CEO
